Lake Como Pian di Spagna natural Reserve - Slow Lake Como

The environmental protection and the respect are the slow tourism basis, this is why we want you to discover our places in Lake Como Italy. Natural reserves are the sites where the right balance between men and nature is restored once again. In particular, on Lake Como and all over the area it’s very common to find such preserved places and the Pian di Spagna natural reserve is one of these. The reserve territory lies where dry land and water meet creating together an environment with a great naturalistic value. The level land involved among Como Lake, the lake of Mezzola and mountains of Val Chiavenna as well as Valtellina hosts a wide range of different flora and fauna species. Among all the animals living in the area perhaps the most important ones are the migratory birds which can find here a safe place to stop in and to nest. As far as the flora is concerned, the cane-brake is the characteristic type of vegetation which can be found walking along the Lake of Mezzola. It is also a perfect shelter for the reproduction of migratory birds such as herons and kingfishers. In the lake, you can also find plants anchored to the depth or floating on the surface for example the waterlilies. The area was first recognized as a natural reserve towards the second half of the 20th century and ever since that time the landscape has completely changed. As a matter of facts, the modern engagement for the territory preservation would have been impossible only two generations ahead when finding a new fertile land to cultivate was the only preoccupation. Today the recognition as a natural reserve has allowed to keep the natural characteristics of the zone, to control the socio-economic activities and to pursue a didactic and recreative aim.

Note from the editor

Between the time of writing and publishing a terrible landslide fall down from Val Bregaglia (CH), this is an environmental disaster, the mud has killed fish and flora in the river Mera, we are still not sure about the condition of the Lake Mezzola and the reserve, but the river from the border with Switzerland to Lake Mezzola is ecologically dead. The river Mera is the same that connects Lake Mezzola to Lake Como, Italy. The consequeses are not so hard to predict because less than 20 years ago a similar incident (in the Italian side) caused a similar result.  Having this news very near to our hearts we, at Slow Lake Como, believe we need to better protect our place, our land and we feel it is also our role to do everything we can to prevent similar incidents. First of all we can share information about protected areas of Lake Como.

Crezzo Lake - Slow Lake Como

Lake Crezzo is a unique pearl, a small charmed lake located in Lake Como (Italy). Lake of Crezzo is a small ‘pool of water’ located in Lasnigo, Barni a district of Como. The place can be easily reached taking the way for Crezzo and flanking Lambretto river. It’s about a moist ambient pretty well preserved: surrounded by mountains and with a breath-taking view on the Lake Como (Italy). The most interesting thing about the lake is its peculiar plant life such as the carnivorous violet plant able to catch small insects. The name ‘Crezzo’ probably comes from the Latin word Carex, referring to the characteristic plant swamp sedge which could be found in the lake when the level of water is low. Walking around the ancient village you could visit Sant’Alessandro Church… curiously, Lasnigo has five churches and only six hundred inhabitants! Sant’Alessandro Church is normally closed, so if you would like to visit its suggestive inner you should better ask the keeper. Along the path leading to Barni, you will find signs indicating Crezzo memorial monument. The monument was built up in commemoration of the plane Atr 42 collision some years ago. Despite the tragic event of the monument, you can enjoy another pleasant view of our precious landscape. A peaceful place where getting lost and relaxing in nature!

Careno vertical emotions in Lake Como, Italy

It is one of the most beautiful hamlets. Invisible from the main road leading to Bellagio, Careno can be spotted only from the lake, and it looks like a wedge descending sharply till the water. Around here there are some of the most impervious and wild corners of the lake. At the end, a few steps from the pier, the two monuments we most love. An old style trattoria where you can taste (real) local delicacies and, just in front, an evocative and gorgeous Romanesque church. How can you visit it? The owners of the trattoria hold the keys, and if you are not in a hurry and look like you “understand” the place, they will show it to you.

The secret side of Lake Como (in Italy) is just under the glamorous surface. Lake Como in Italy has become one of the most known landscapes on the planet and probably you have had a glimpse of it as the setting for a multi-millionaire wedding or the holiday vacation of celebrities and VIPs from all over the world. At first, it was George Clooney followed by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Robert De Niro, Matt Damon and Catherine Zeta-Jones to name few of them. However, there is more to know beyond its glamorous surface, it conceals, in fact, a secret life, deep, somehow mysterious. Away from the mainstream monuments and well-known routes, there are some perfect destinations for those who are curious to search for the unexpected and hidden gems, surrounded by mysteries and local legends. A famous local singer Davide van desfros is convinced there is a very Dark Way of Lario – the other name of Lake Como.

There are some infinite possibilities about what to do and see around the lake and its surroundings. Some places are already part of a collective imagination and must be safeguarded. Nevertheless, it is impossible to elicit its deep essence by visiting only the mainstream and most known places. The area is worthy of being explored, discovered and this requires time. Such time is rewarded by the intensity of an unforgettable experience. This is the reason why Lake Como is the ideal destination for the slow tourism of those who want to understand, live and breathe the atmosphere of the area.

The first thing to decide when choosing what to do and see on Lake Como is to think about which means of transportation is the most suitable to your needs. It is worthy to say that many mansion houses or shores can be reached only via the lake, some incredible and scenic monuments can be accessed only through rugged trails and unpaved tracks, many routes are narrow and windy.

Do not be afraid though. Wayfarers, pilgrims, and traders have all wandered across this land. If you like walking, if you love giving yourself the time to explore the places without the obsession of using the car, you will find ancient and breathless trails, a well-organized ferry service which can take you where car and bus drivers do not dare to go.

slowlakecomo-33By the way, the way of life on the lake is a true philosophy and to absorb yourself within its territory is the best choice to truly understand it. We have selected some hidden gems and less known places and you will discover more by searching our website. Feel at ease while you let yourself wander among small hidden beaches, tiny villages on the edge of scenic cliffs over the lake, mysterious and unusual monuments, wild and beautiful scenery, meadows where witches are said to be present and erratic rocks.
